Episode #104: Your Nervous System Is Talking - Are You Listening?
Your Nervous System Is Talking — Are You Listening?
Last week, something happened that surprised me… and also reminded me how far I’ve come.
I returned to teach Pilates in a studio setting.
It’s a side quest I’ve talked about before, something I’m doing purely for joy, not pressure. But even though I’ve been teaching movement since high school… even though I’ve taught dance, middle school, Pilates, and every kind of class… my nervous system responded like I was stepping into danger.
From the moment I had to introduce myself, my voice started shaking.
Like shaking.
I couldn’t stop it.
My brain went straight to, “Oh no, they’re going to think I don’t know what I’m doing.”
But here’s the truth: nothing “bad” was happening.
And yet my body was reacting as if I was about to face a lion.
Why? Because your nervous system doesn’t rationalize.
The same part of your brain—the amygdala—interprets any moment of uncertainty as a potential threat.
Teaching a class “just right”?
Taking a test?
Speaking in front of a room?
Being watched?
Trying something new?
Your body responds the same way it would if you were fleeing a predator.
And it didn’t stop there.
During the training, I started getting a constant, dull headache. Hours under fluorescent lighting, plus the neon-light aesthetic of the studio, was overstimulating my nervous system.
Fluorescent lights flicker in a way the eyes and brain can detect, even subconsciously. For people who are sensitive, this can trigger hyperarousal, stress, or fatigue.
Add that to performance pressure and unfamiliar territory?
My body went into full fight-or-flight.
But here’s the part that matters most…
I noticed.
Years ago, this was my norm.
That low-level, always-on, always-bracing state.
Great for middle school classrooms.
Great for productivity.
Not great for living.
I used to think feeling “wired and tired” was just who I was.
Now?
I’ve spent years regulating my nervous system.
Grounding.
Breathing.
Anchoring into safety.
Building a new baseline.
Because of that, I could tell instantly when something was off.
I could tell when my body was overwhelmed.
And I knew how to bring myself back.
Sunlight.
Walks.
Body tapping.
Slow breathing.
Space.
Compassion.
Truth.
Not truth tied to performance.
Not “proving energy.”
Just returning to what I know:
I’m good at what I do.
I’m capable.
I’m safe.
I’m home in my body.
Maybe you’ve been there, too.
Maybe you’ve lived in that constant hum of stress for so long it feels normal.
Maybe you’ve convinced yourself, “This is just how I am.”
Maybe you feel exhausted but can’t rest.
Maybe peace feels foreign.
Maybe you’re waiting for external proof that you’re good enough.
But here’s the most beautiful truth I hope you take from this episode:
You can relearn safety.
You can recalibrate your baseline.
You can return to yourself.
Not the version of you who is bracing…
but the version who breathes deeply, trusts herself, and feels at home in her body.
The calm you’re craving isn’t out there—it’s already within you.
It’s just waiting for its chance to rise.
If this resonates…
