Anchored in the Now: Gratitude & Showing Up for the Season You're In
Summer is coming, my birthday is coming, and the season shift always feels like a good opportunity to focus on what's going well... all the gratitude you have for everything going on in your life right now. As well as what you desire and where you'd like to keep going.
If I'm being really honest, this season is packed with so many things I love. Soccer tournaments, end of season baseball games, dance recitals, school celebrations, summer. A very full season, and a lot to be grateful for.
So wherever you're at, I hope you're able to anchor into all of the things you're feeling grateful for right now in this moment.... even if your plate is packed. If you can find gratitude and just enjoy things for whatever they are and be as present as possible, that is such a gift to yourself.
Stop Waiting for Completion to Feel Good
I think sometimes we wait to feel really happy or grateful for something when it's at completion. And yes, a lot of things are coming to completion right now. But there's also so much good while you're in it.
There are a number of things in your life that are equally likely to be never fully completed. I think about this with work, workouts, and new music I'm always listening to. There's always a little bit of continuity in doing things that I love — to remind me that I'm not just waiting for the big event, the end of the year, the summer, the birthday, the conclusion of fifth grade to feel really good.
Even this past weekend, I was reminded of that. My daughter and I spent some time bedazzling, she bedazzled some of her makeup cases and a Touchland hand sanitizer, I bedazzled a cup that holds some of our nail polishes. And yes, it was nice to feel that sense of "ooh, I like how this turned out" at the finished product. But just being in the moment and enjoying what you're creating and the process is equally important.
Sometimes you need that pause to just enjoy something in the present. Maybe it's a morning walk, maybe it's a workout, maybe it's just your cup of coffee. Let yourself enjoy those things.
The Practice Is the Point
I think about this with meditation too. When I first added it in, it was with the end goal of being calmer, more at peace, less anxious, especially after having kids. I really noticed these feelings in my body. And noticing is part one, right? Because sometimes we're just on autopilot for so long that we don't even realize we're carrying that stress around because it's just our norm.
So I chose to add meditation and stillness and breathing to my routine. It was hard at first because it wasn't the norm. And I truly added it because of the result, I wanted to feel calmer, more grounded, easier to come back to a baseline level of calm versus staying at an elevated stress where I was easier to trigger into an overreaction.
But it wasn't like one meditation and suddenly I had what I desired, checked it off, done. It was a practice that needed to be continued and ongoing. Even if I only do it every other day for five minutes, or I go consistently for seven days and then don't for three, I can always come back to it. And I'm able to come back because I feel so good even after just one session.
Same thing with workouts. A lot of women start working out because they want to change their body, get stronger, work toward a health goal. But it's not one or two workouts and you're at your goal, game over. Somewhere along the way you have to find the feeling good after every workout so that you can keep showing up.
There's no perfection here. It's not about doing it perfectly, that's not how workouts work, that's not how meditation works, I don't think that's how life works. It's more about what you consistently do, what your consistent thoughts and beliefs are. Always coming back to what you want to do, who you want to be, and how you want to show up.
Let Your Desires Exist
Sometimes we create resistance around what we want, whether it's a personal brand, a podcast, a business, a relationship, or a financial goal. And sometimes we create resistance around even wanting it. That resistance can then block us from taking action, believing it's possible, or letting the next thing show up for us in the right way.
So let your desires exist.
We can add so much resistance logically... "this doesn't make sense," or worrying other people might judge us for wanting what we want. Maybe we don't see anyone else doing what we want to do. Or maybe we see so many people doing it that we think there's no space for us to also be successful. These are all just thoughts to move through and look at in a different light.
Especially when it comes to worrying about other people's opinions. I truly believe that no one doing more than you is ever going to judge you. If anything, they are so busy and booked and loving their own life that they're just unbothered by what other people are doing, or they're in celebration of it, because they already have that belief for themselves.
So if you have any resistance around what you desire because of someone else's beliefs about what's possible, why choose to live by someone else's beliefs or values? Surround yourself with more like minded people. Coaches, mentors, Facebook groups, people you follow on social media who have a more abundant, possibility based outlook on life. Let them inspire you to go after whatever it is you desire.
